This could have been office porn

Once a week I hire a desk on the first floor of a lovely messy building. I'm on the "journalist block", but there are other creatives. Drama writers, translators, theater makers - real creatives, as I like to call them. Upstairs is a bistro where they sell organic bread, weird salads and local beers. It's all very accessible and friendly and yes, rather hipster. We office types make our phone calls in or on the slightly sad furniture in the hall, near the stairs, so we don't disturb our colleagues with our interviews.

So there I was, chatting away on my mobile, when a young man walks up the steps. I follow his progress, we make eye contact and there is something utterly innocent about him. Dark curly hair, dog eyes, short beard. Soft looking and very young (though probably nearly 30, I can't tell anymore). He says, with a…

Why I don't love my Kindle as much as I thought I would

Let's do a bit of namedropping first. I had the pleasure of interviewing Amazon's CTO Werner Vogels. What a pleasant Dutch man he turned out to be. He loves his job, he seems to love life as well. The interview being about Amazon & tech, we also talked about books and e-books and e-readers and inspired by the whole setting, I decided to purchase a Kindle. At last. The one with the wee light in it. And a purple cover. I was so excited when it arrived! And it came with a mystery: the German/French packaging contained a sunflower seed. Which I didn't plant, to my regret. But all was light and joy, for a few weeks. I was back to adolescent reading levels, but with type and light settings adjusted to my ageing eyes. Glorious.

No Audible, no library, no Unlimited

I transferred my American Amazon account to…

Review: Ninth City Burning

Review: Ninth City BurningNinth City Burning by J. Patrick Black
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

After the unpleasant shock of this being a young adult SF, the shocks just continued. Every new PoV had a new voice and every next one seemed more nasal, American and adolescent. The droning went on for hours and hours and hours and I kept listening because my next credit on the Audible-subscription is not for weeks. Gods this was rubbish. It helped me sleep though.

The story: 500 years ago Earth was attacked by aliens. Only nine cities are left on the planet. Young people are recruited to fight the aliens. A major development brings the war closer to home. Heroes rise. Oh and there's magic. But it's not magic, it's called thelemity and some have it and some don't. But the war effort needs it to power machines. I think. I lost the plot and I didn't care.…

Review: The Annihilation Score

Review: The Annihilation Score

The Annihilation Score by Charles Stross
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I accidentally started to read book #6 in this series. I liked the female lead and her vampire cello and thought I'd go back to the beginning. You know, get to know the characters and get some more background. Lo and behold: the main character of book #1 is about a young male who enjoys punning and doing... stuff. I don't know. After a gap of weeks I picked it up again and couldn't remember what I'd read. Something James Bondy with other dimensions. And girls. Girlfriends. And MI6-ish paranormal activities. Boring.
