This is not YA-fantasy, thank goodness

In Conquest Born (In Conquest Born, #1)In Conquest Born by C.S. Friedman My rating: 3 of 5 stars Indeed, this is epic. It is so epic I don’t quite know what to say about it. I love C.S. Friedman and this book made me return to the beloved Coldfire Trilogy. In Conquest Born is dark and grim and one does not always want Grim & Dark in one’s life. But, regardless of my own life, this is a clever book and to think this was her debut… Incredible. The other reviewers have said it all: complex characters, sweeping worlds… The use and abuse of power was fascinating and to construct an entire race that abhors softness and compassion in favour of hate and animosity. That loathes changes and obsesses over what’s fixed – and to pit those misogynists against another race that believes genetic engineering will solve everything and changed humans are good humans (and women are cool, too)… Wow, that’s some amazing therapy right there. I think the audio version cost the book a star. Petty, perhaps. The narrator’s voice is pleasant but there is not a very distinct difference between characters and I had to rewind sometimes to know whose chapter I was listening too. I will get a paper copy of this book. It needs to be reread in times where grim and dark are wholly appropriate. I won’t easily forget this story. View all my reviews
